Long ago, I posted an interview with the guy that invented the pair.
I cannot find it in the archives,,,but I will give a synopsis.
HE said that Minsc had suffered a blow to the head, he found this caravan, and saw boo for the first time, and the guy, realizing that Minsc was a little mentally challenged told him a grand tale of this creature. Minsc believed it, and bought the hampster off of the guy. As far as the creator is concerned, Boo is a regular hampster.
BUT, in a D&D guide for Halflings and Gnomes, it made a comment (only one reference, mind you) of the existance of Miniturized Giant Space Hampsters.
