A bit more info on playing with 6 of your own characters. ( and a small spoiler )
After you have set up the multiplayer game with your 6 characters, save the game. Quit BG2, then move that saved game from the "mpsave" folder into the "save" folder. Then restart BG 2, select 'single player' and then load up your save. This means you don't have to fiddle around with all the multiplayer setup stuff to get your game running.

6 character solo is a viable option - and how I chose to play ...

If importing characters from BG1 - the character you import into the first slot will be become the main character in BG2 and get special powers - even if they were not the main character in BG1. The character who was the main character in BG1 one will still retain their special abilities even if you import them into any of the other character slots.
