Well you just gotta keep trying different strategies I guess. I ended up hiding until the slayer unsummoned. Then I isolated Irenicus and broke through most of his shielding. I surrounded him with summonings and my two fighters. Aerie and Cernd healing once or twice. It was no longer impossible. Wow! Did not think that I would get through that.
It seems that you cannot continue after the final battle. If I get Throne of Bhaal would I be able to continue from here or would I go back to an earlier save game. Anyway, I am starting a new character as I said to try to do some of the things that I missed. Thanks for the support everyone.
