It's a good thought but no, casting Protection from Evil on yourself when you fight Irenicus in the last battle won't due anything. What is true though is that you should immediately start hacking away at Irenicus the moment you see him. When he's out of the way, then go after the other demons. Good luck.
TIP: Unless you are planning to go to ToB with this party use all potions, wands and limited-use items you have; It's the last battle, you're not going to need them anymore!
