How about having an invisible character move to just out of sight range of the Halflings and cast Cloudkill (as many as you can) just at the edge of visual range. Important that the halflings can't see the casting characters.
The halfling fighter types will probably run forward, but are easy on their own. The mages usually just sit still and die.
