Heh, Polymorph will not destroy items, however, Petrify and Disintegrate will.
I generally fight the Shadow Dragon at Party Lvl 12, Firkragg at 15 and Max for the Black Dragon.
Which is kinda overkill for the Black, because well... 
I don't get scratched... Firkragg puts up a good fight though.
