I havn't played too much of BGI and I am only up to Chapter 3 in BGII but I think BGI is slightly better. Only because it has a more adventure like feel whereas BGII has a more hack and slash feel to it, IMHO. Don't get me wrong both are great games and I plan to play through both of them many times.
Right now i'm playing through BGI and then i'm gonna import my Ranger to BGII and play through that. It should be fun.
