AFAIK you *can't* kill him as he is a plot-critical character, so the programmers have scripted in another NPC which will appear if you try to off Aran Linvail. This other NPC, according to those who have browsed the files, if armed to the teeth with whoopa$$ weapons and can't be killed either. His sword does something like 1000 points damage per hit.

You will get a chance, in Chapter 3, to kill him, depending on what choice you make when you are confronted with it.

You don't really need to kill Aran for the xp anyway, the game has more than enough to go around.
