You don't have to heal the necromancer to keep him alive. He won't die, regardless of what you do. I've had times where I've blown through the Sphere in an hour or so of game time, and other times where I've rested several times, and so taken 24 hours or so to clear it out. Either way, you put the demon heart in the engine, talk to him, and take him outside. The result is the same...he says his piece, and THEN he dies.

An interesting side note is his reaction if you take him out at night, rather than in the daytime. He says something to the effect of Oh well, at least I got to see the sky and stars, if not the sun.
