This is correct. You can only backstab with a MELEE weapon usable by a true class thief; specifically, longsword, shortsword, scimitar, ninja-to, wazikashi, katana, dagger, club, or quarterstaff (I hope I've listed them all
). In addition, there are a few creatures that cannot be backstabbed.
