I did BG1 with my main char as a mage - it makes it difficult and MUCH more strategic. Since I played mage in BG1 and used to always play mage in the tabletop version, I decided to go monk in BG2. Now level 20 and durn near impossible to kill when magic items are combined with natural class abilities. With a girdle of fire giant str or whatnot the monk can easily average 100dmg per round (almost always hits).
At any rate - the answer to your question is YES, it is worth it, but pick your party carefully as always, and be prepared to run out of spells and having to rest. A lot. Get it so your mage has 18 Int, 18 Dex and 16 Con. Another option is play fighter to level 5 or so and then dual class so you start off with more hitpoints etc.
