Am I the only one who uses a Gnome/Illusionist? Gnomes get that extra intelligence helping to guarantee that there's no limit to the number of spells that can be learned for each level and increases the odds of learning them in the first place. Specialising gets one extra spell per level. That's worth a lot.
I've seen good arguments for dual class fighter/mage, but again that means you can't specialise in a school. I can't see giving up that extra spell just for some fighting abilities which mages aren't so good at anyway.
