Two good and underrated weapons are daggers:
Firetooth (2D4 plus 3 damage, as well as fire damage ) which is better than most longswords, except that you can throw it repeatedly!
*Strength bonuses apply to hurled weapons*
Pixie Prick (plus 3) is arguably the best melee dagger in the game, but has such a horrid name.
