Since I do not know all of the D&D rules for such things, I can only speculate that 2nd edition AD&D has a class restriction to Druids dualing as Mages, much like a halfling can not be a Paladin, but in third edition, you can.
Maybe you are thinking of the 3rd edition rules...I don't know...that is just something to think on.
I am not sure if I even know what I am talking about.
