If you import characters to ToB, ToB will bump your characters up or down to 8.5M XP. I think the same thing happens if you play through from the end battle of SoA...but I'm not positive on that last...

You should continue playing your game. Even if you hit the cap, the game still keeps track of XPs accrued and should tack them on once you install ToB. There shouldn't be any "loss" of XPs, per se...
