I think Edwin would drop that key when he dies, you wouldnt have to spawn item. I killed Edwin too with one backstab, but too long ago so I couldnt remember clearly. But I did finisht the quest without reloading or anything

Twice I killed him before the quest was completed (I was chaotic good....blah)....neither times he drop any key when he died.
