As far as I know unistalling doesn't actually wipe your save games or your character files, so it should be safe. If you want to make sure, transfer the files to a temporary folder somewhere, then uninstall, and then put 'em back when you've installed again.
It should work, and there's no 'I hope this doesn't erase all of my hard work' and crossing of fingers.
