Yes, the Dungeons and dragon world uses dice for determining alot of stuff. With a computer its easier of course, just gives you a random number instead of actually rolling dice.
1d10 is just a random roll from 1-10
1d8 is a random number from 1-8
1d6 is just a random number 1-6
So If your thief gets 1d6 hp per level, you get a random roll each time you level up of 1-6. So after 5 levels, you can be as low as 5 HP (all 1's, or as high as 30 hp (all 6's) of course most of the time its about in the middle.
With multiple dice, such as 2d4, all that means is that you get 2 random numbers of 1-4 added together.. Thus 1-4/1-4 so you'll get a number of 2-8 for your final roll. Generally the higher the number the better it is. 2d4 is better than a 1d8. On both of them, the max you can get is 8, but with the 2d4 roll you have a higher lesser roll (2 compared to 1)
So 3d6 would be 1-6 plus 1-6 plus 1-6 or a final number of 3-18.
And yes, with your casters in most cases, the higher you go in levels, the more spell slots you can use for spells. You can put in any spells you want, as long as you have that spell memorized in your spell book. If you can use the 3rd level spell fireball, and you are a 5th level mage, you can memorize and cast 1 fireball (before having to rest and memorize it again)
If you don't have the fireball spell wrote down in your spellbook, you cant memorize it. So you have to first write the spell in your spellbook, THEN you can memorize it.
A 6th level mage gets 2 slots for 3rd level spells, so you can memorize 2 fireballs if you want, or 1 fire ball and 1 other 3rd level spell.
Basically before each time you sleep, you check over what spells you are going to memorize, and decide if you want to keep them or change them for the next day.
Sorcerers are different, Alot better for players who are familiar with magic. They don't have to memorize spells like regular mages do. They get less spells than the regular mage can, but they don't have to memorize spells. They can cast what ever they want as long as their uses last.
