I ahevn't played Icewind Dale yet, but most people on this forum seem to enjoy it. It's supposed to be more linear and less elaborate than the BG series. Also, you create the entire party yourself.
Another great game is Planescape Torment.
I think you could say that IWD is heavier on the fighting aspect and PS: Torment heavier on the roleplaying. BG would fall somewhere in the middle.
