You need the bonus merchants download to get the sheild, unless you have the collectors eddition.
Either way you can buy the shield from a woman in The Adventurers Mart once you've got the patch installed.
My main Character just now is:
Aalax De'Nara (lv 12, half-elf Conjurer) on Chapter 3
Weilding Rod of terror and that sling +3 i found somewhere....
Wearing Mages robe of fire resistance...until i can afford the Robe of Veccna
My favourite charcater was:
Jerome (lv 21, human Fallen Paladin) Exp cap removed
Weilding Vorpal Blade, wearing Red dragon armour.
