i do a hybrid of the multi make-all-the-chars and using the npc's, namely, i keep the npc's and just hax0r their classes. i enjoy the interactions but prefer my own mix of abilities.
me - elven fighter/thief
minsc - undead hunter (gave ring of human influence rather than change stats)
jaheira - fighter/cleric
aerie - fighter/mage (im not big on clerics as healing/curing potions are more convenient and a long bow is handy for when you need to conserve your mage spells)
valygar - archer, who gets replaced by
imoen - thief/mage (doesnt feel right changing her)
i try to only keep five in the party so i can pick up the odd npc for their particular quests and then let them go.
