Each familiar gets different bonuses: some are good at stealth, others have special attacks. Frankly, most of these are fairly wimpy: the single most important feature of a familiar is that they provide the caster with extra hit points. Once you've got one, I suggest telling it to climb into your pack, so it never gets hurt, because if it dies, you not only lose the hit points--you also suffer a *permanant* 1 Constitution loss.
Since this is a one-cast-and-forget spell, it's not worth memorizing in place of another. Just find or buy a scroll (they're cheap), and get your PC to cast it. No party NPC will be able to cast the spell, so don't bother giving it to 'em.
