Depends on your party i guess. If your a Good paladin you of course won't want to kill him, you want his strength to prosper against evil. If your a neutral or evil party though, his weapons are very tempting and since you don't lose reputation for killing him, swing away. Its alot easier to kill him now than in BG1.
And if you don't want to feel guilty, I just let a vampire charm my heavy fighter so that way I blamed it on the vampire. LOOK! I didnt' attack you on purpose, the vampire made me! Now let me kill that vampire and pick up your 2 nice scimitars he he.
