Ermmmm, I am pretty sure that when you installed the game it asked you if you wanted directX 6. If you said yes, it will have installed it. Not sure, but I don't think it would have installed game without it!
May be graphics card. A way around that is to reduce res, I think. Also, in modify graphics screen, it helps to turn off the 'weather' effects. You probably get the REALLY clunky effect when a lot is going on/lots of npc's/enemies on screen. You can tell I need a better graphics card myself, can't you!? Sigh. Can't afford at the moment.
