Hm, Umber Hulks are quite easy to kill with a cloud kill spell, they die if they fail their saving throw, whereas you Party only gets hurt a little every turn. So, its not wise to stay hours in the cloud, but anyway, a short moment doesn't hurt that much.
The Windspear quest I did in fact before going to Spellhold (around Level 12) With my main char beeing an undead hunter and with the mind-Protection shield, the Vampires were quite easy. OK, the dragon i didn't kill (in fact I tried, but no chance...), but anyway as paladin you have to speak with your order before killing him...
