Learning which spells work in certain situations takes a little time. Don't make the mistake of going for all the offensive spells and no defensive. For clerics, chaotic commands and remove fear are going to be your best assets. Spells and items that protect you from hold, stun, charm, confusion and domination are absolutely essential! Items that raise your saving throws are great too. The potion of invulnerability may seem useless if you already have great armor, but don't forget about that little +5 to saving throws! THAT'S the big bonus! There's also a small sheild somewhere. It doesn't look like much until you look and see that it protects you from nearly every mind affecting spell out there. Don't be afraid to stop and pick items tailored for the occasion either. Use that bag of holding to hold all those situation specific items. Umber Hulks? Whip out Lilacor! Tough undead bugging you? Change from dual weild to Azure edge, the mind protecting sheild +4, and boots of speed. Run around and twack those nasty puppies from a safe distance! If you're far enough along to have the improved mace of disruption, keep it handy if you're forced to get up close and personal. Keep a couple good blunt weapons around for those clay golem nasties. Don't hoard your spells, use them wisely. Elemental slaves are great for taking out large groups of lower level monsters as they are immune to normal attacks. This way, they don't soften you up with petty damage and it saves your party member HPs for the tough guys where you need them most and the elementals are useless except as fodder! Strategy and spell use is critical to turning an impossible battle into an easy one.
