I think I had problems replacing Jan with Imoen, instead I kept them both and kicked someone else out, but it depends on who is in your party.
Also, if you want to do more of the side quests you probably need a good thief like Jan. The rest of the storyline doesn't really require one though, if you want to open chests you can always try forcing it anyway, and as long as you detect traps you can get through.
It's a shame they dual classed Imeon, I would have preffere her, and found her more useful, if she was just a thief of some sort.
