I don't think the Monk can wear anything resembling armour but you can wear robes - not mage robes, robes of protection +1/+2 etc...
The bridge murder quest, i think you can get the book from merchants at the place you're supp'sd to meet the guy...er i havn't actaully done this quest however so i can't be sure sorry...
