The answer to your first question is that they HEAR you. Yes there is a point in the "move silently" skill. You probably failed the roll and they hear you. Hehe, I dunno, try taking one step at a time while hidden in the shadows and seeing how close u can get to the mage before he casts True sight- that's if he casts it at all. I haven't actually tried this, could be interesting. About the backstab thing- yeah that is a bitch.
