Hmm... odd as it seems, I regard the Robe of Vecna as an exceptionally useful - almost essential - item for any budding Mage. The ability to boost your spellcasting speed is very important. With spellcasters, as with gunfighters, the quickest to the draw tends to win!
Example: One of my favourite offensive gambits was a Spell Sequencer loaded up with three Magic Missiles. Nalia used these often to assassinate rival spellcasters. With the Robe, the speed of casting was so great the spell often hit before the spellcasters could get their defences up!
