I do believe there is a point in the conversation where you can ask him to turn around quickly and just to let you have a "peek" at what's inside the chest. When that happens, you will be able to grab the "item" inside the chest quickly before he turns around. He will realized that he has been guarding an empty chest (thanks to you) for god knows how long and will leave peacefully.
