Not quite correct, Accord.
Protection from Magic will make you immune to ANY form of magic, including imprisonment.
Jimmy, if he's still a lich he probably has Improved Mantle or something still in effect. Kill his lich form first, I'm assuming you managed to do that earlier.
When he turns into the demilich, you need AT LEAST +4 weapons to hit the guy. You can try:
1. Flametongue (+4 to hit)
2. Staff of Rynn +4 available from the Adventurers Mart but it's not cheap.
There are others, but you don't get them till Chapter 5 at least.
Or Melf's Magic Meteors as mentioned above.
If you don't have a +4 weapon, you're out of luck - try again when you get one.
