Just to be more specific, you will need to kill (yes, that's a surprise) all the initial kobolds guarding the crystal. Once they are substantially all dead, the shamen and avatar of "kobolds" will appear, the crystal should automatically go into your inventory as soon as the everyone else but your party is dead.
