Sir Sarles is a chump.
Give him the illithium and then go straight away to the temple and collect your reward. Sarles says he'll send a messenger but he doesn't.
Still want that mace upgrade? If so return to Sarles , chop him to bits and collect YOUR illithium from the gutpile on the floor.
PS --You have to kill him if you want it. There isn't a thief alive that can pinch a 200 pound chunk of ore off a pansy artist.
