My thief have a x4 backstab, around 90 both in "Hide in shadow" & "Move silently", but he seems not succesfully backstab everytime, sometimes works sometimes not.

Does it need to be walk next to the target BEFORE you command the attack? Or does it need to be physically at the back of the target? I tried few times it seems succeed more often, but I'm not sure it's just a coincedience?
