I always played a mage in BG1, ToSC, and IWD, but decided that I wanted something very different when I got to BG2. I also wanted a character that I couldn't just pick up to join my party (NPC). I decided to try the monk. I agree that at the lower levels it's a bit tough, although you move faster, have stunning hand ability, resistance to poison, etc. I am level 20 now and cantell you it is like having a killing machine. My hands at +4 or +5, I'm like at 60 something percent magic resistance, and I believe I can only be hurt by magical weapons. Vampires, golems, dragons, mind flayers, I can handle almost anything on my own. Quivering palm. . . . . well, there is just nothing like it. Lay on hands ability to heal yourself up. I was skeptical at first and you do need a good party in the lower levels, but I have been very pleased with my monk, actually very pleasantly surprised.
