There is some elven chain that you can get that a mage can wear and STILL be able to cast spells, but I forget where you get it, sorry

If you want to cheat, you could try Shadowkeeper! Since I got Shadowkeeper, I have used it for one thing only - to boost starting Abilities 'cos I get SO BORED trying to roll for 90+ score. If you want to use it this way and not for SERIOUS cheating, give your mage high Dexterity and Constitution for better armour class/more hit points. However, if I could make a suggestion:
Create a Human Fighter, so that you get higher hit points naturally. For skills, only allocate things a Mage can do. As soon as the opening cut-scene has ended, Dual to Mage. You will LOSE your Fighter skill but retain the Abilities. When you get level 8 Mage, YOU GET THE FIGHTER SKILLS BACK, so your Mage can use Mage weapons MUCH better than the non-dualed Mage.
Have fun!
