Volo, Elminster and Drizzt Do'Urden all come from the Forgotten Realms books. As does the Nether Scroll - Edwin's quest item.
I have heard that many of the NPCs from Baldur's Gate, and several that made their way into Shadows of Amn, were old PCs of the design team.
