I played the Totemic Druid solo, and both he and to a lesser extent the beastmaster (which I've also played) gain massive advantages from their summoned allies. The Spirit animals stick around for ages and take a lot to kill.
This is not to say don't play them. On the contrary they are fun classes, just not weak.
For a weak party I'd do this
Human Diviner (Intel 10 or miniumum)
Orc? Cleric/thief (low dexterity and wisdom plus all specialisation points into detect illusion)
Human Archer/Cleric
Halfling Berzerker. (prof. Shortsword)
Gnome Wizard Slayer (prof. Spear)

Maybe Weak was the wrong word
I mean not so much played
I was actually think of:
Jester
Cleric/Thief
Diviner
Totemic Druid
BeastMaster
WizardSlayer/Mage (hehe)
