I know about him killing in 1 shot as I intentionally drew him out through my own interest. I just stood directly behind Renal, had my guys surround the two of us and then summoned some skeletons to surround us all. When he appeared (landing in the traps I'd set) I just set about him. He never managed to kill any of my party but after about 10 min's of caning him I sorta guessed he was never going down. He never appeared incidentally when I went to take out Renal "proper" so I guessed he was there just to keep the plot rolling.
