I came across an extremely cheap way to kill him and get the ring. However, you don't get the experience. I didn't wind up saving, it was just too cheesy.
1. Set 6-10 Traps where he will appear before you summon him (Use the Gethras house to rest and return to set traps if you only have one thief)
2. Leave the rest of your party right near the steps upstairs
3. Summon him with a thief with good pickpocket skills(I used Jan)
4. (This part's kind of tricky). Immediately after giving him the golden pieces, pause the game.Unpause, then pause (repeatedly and quickly) until you can pickpocket him with the thief skill button (This has to be before he starts talking again). Your thief will now have the ring.
5. Immediately after getting the ring, run to the steps (use haste before if you want) Take your entire party upstairs. Wait for at least a minute (real time, if you don't he'll still be alive) When you go back down, he will have died. The demi lich never appears, unless he goes somewhere else I'm not aware of.
Like i said it's real cheap.
