I finnished the game with a fighter/mage/thief at normal difficulty, but I didn't rest much at all then. It took 18 days to complete the game. I think I should have played at insane difficulty, because there were a lot of disapointing battles. If you play a fighter/mage/thief, you will have no trouble at all.
Anyway, I agree that you need to be a thief. Maybe you should dual a swashbuckler to a mage and solo. You need the thief-skills, and being a mage makes you able to use all wands and scrolls.
