"best party" and "ideal party" are entirely subjective. So very much depends upon your personal style of combat (prefer melee, ranged, or magical) and perferred party alignment.

My personal "best" party is requires a strong melee conponent. 2 full tanks, 2 mixed melee-ranged or melee-ranged-magic, 2 spell casters.

Example: (my current party)
TANK: me ... Alarra (Inquisitor)
TANK: Jahiera
MIXED: Valygar
MIXED: Mazzy Fentan
SPELLS: Imoen
SPELLS: Nalia

I realize that this is a bit of a different party. Using Jahiera as a pure tank is a change of pace. Also, she's using a +3 scimitar or speed that I've imported into the game. Don't bother flaming me about how others are better tanks (such as Minsc or Korgan). I know that. I only wanted to try something different for a change. And I'm not complaining. My party's still kicking any asses that get in its way.

Mazzy Fentan is an NPC that doesn't get much mention on this board, but I've found her to be quite a useful little halfling Truesword. Mazzy also has some Paladin-ish innate abilities that you wouldn't expect in a pure fighter.

5 points in shortbow and 3 points in short sword to start. And as a pure fighter, she tanks up easily. Her only glaring weakness is a 15 STR. I haven't given her a STR enhancing item yet since she's rarely in my front line and uses her short bow almost exclusively. Also, since she does have 3 points in short sword, she's perhaps the only real melee NPC that will get full use out of some of the useful short sword in BG2.
