Your manual should tell you how to allocate your ability scores and roll etc. It's a good idea to at least BROWSE the manual if you're unfamiliar with AD&D or with BG.
As to class, it's totally up to you. just read about the classes, find one that's interesting to play, then play it. Sometimes people get too caught up in *what is the best class to win* rather than *what is the best class to get the most enjoyment for me*.
