Hi,
Greater Werewolves are tough customers, and I believe you need +3 weopons to even hurt them. They are like Trolls in that they regenerate, so it you are not doing enough damage they will keep healing until uninjured.
Personally I would pass on Cernd. Yes as a GW he does excellent damage when he manages to hit, which isn't often. Unlike GW who have excellent THACO's, Cernd's ToHit totally sux, so he doesn't hit very often. His other major deficiency is that unlike GW who have excellent AC and good HP's, Cernd's ArmorClass sux big time and he has low HitPoints. So unlike GW's who are hard to hit and damage, Cernd gets hit alot, and takes alot of damage, often too much. Cernd does not benefit from the GW regeneration ability during combat either. He has regenerative ability when his staff is equipped, of course he can't equip his staff when transformed, which often leaves you in a position of trying unsuccessfully to get him out of combat so that you can heal him before he croaks.
I know some people like Cernd, and I have nothing against him myself, but once I had Jaheira wint the battle with the Druid queen freeing the grove, I took Cernd to find his son and let him go to raise him.
