Actually, you can. Any time you want, just copy the saves from your save folder to your mpsave folder in your BGII directory. Start a multiplayer game, load the save and add any characters you want and start the game, save, quit and copy the saves back from your mpsave to your save folder and continue playing single player.

Easy.
