There is a chart in the back of the book that shows the amount you must donate to acheive the next level of reputation. The higher your rep, the more you must donate. As previously stated, If you have an evil party or party members, it's the last thing you want to do.
There are a few people that you get XP's from for giving money but for the most part you are doing a good deed when you give to beggars.
