The original Protection from Evil spell would give the recipient a bonus of -2 to AC and +2 to saving throws against any attack or spell cast by those of evil alignment, as well as protection against mental control/domination from an outside source (not charm spells, but things like vampire gaze or a ghost's magic jar). In addition, you could not be touched by any being not native to this plane, which would include elementals, demons, or devils. (tannar'ri? yugoloth? give me a break! *sheesh* just call them what they are....)
