In pen and paper AD&D you use dice to generate numbers. There are lots of diffent dice, each with a different amount of sides. The d# method is shorthand for the number of sides the dice has. Eg d6 = a six sided dice(rolls 1 to 6), d8=an eight sided dice(1 to , d12=a twelve sided dice (1 to 12).
The number before the d is how many of that type of dice you roll.
Eg 3d6 would mean you roll 3 6 sided dice and add them together (giving you a number from 3 to 1
