After level 9 or so, characters get a set number of hit points. Their other abilities continue to improve (proficiencies, THAC0, etc), so higher level characters are much more powerful even if hp gain slows down.
Only your main character can have a stronghold. There may be a way around this in multiplayer games, but it's true for regular single player games.
